CQC Regulation 17 · Good governance

CQC Regulation 17 compliance: good governance

Regulation 17 requires providers to have systems and processes that assess, monitor and improve the quality and safety of services, assess and reduce risk, keep accurate records, seek feedback, and evaluate and improve their practice. It is the regulation most often linked to the well-led key question.

MyCareCompliance brings practical CQC audits, evidence, workforce oversight and improvement actions into one platform for adult social care providers.

Who it applies to

All CQC-registered providers. It is the specific responsibility of leaders — the registered manager, nominated individual and directors or trustees.

What providers should consider

  • Is there a scheduled audit programme that covers every key area and location?
  • Do audit findings turn into actions with owners and deadlines, and are they verified?
  • Do leaders see a regular governance report with trends, not only single scores?
  • Are records accurate, complete, contemporaneous and securely stored?
  • Are repeat findings spotted across months and locations?

What evidence may be relevant

  • Audit schedule and completed audits
  • Improvement or action plan with status history
  • Monthly governance reports and meeting minutes
  • Risk register
  • Feedback surveys and the actions taken

Common areas to review

  • Audits completed but actions never closed
  • Leaders unaware of issues found in audits
  • Percentages reported without the number audited
  • The same failure appearing month after month

Internal audit questions

  1. 1.How many audits were due this month, and how many were completed?
  2. 2.What proportion of actions are overdue, and who verified the closed ones?
  3. 3.Which findings have repeated in two or more audits?
  4. 4.Did the nominated individual receive and act on a governance report this month?

Practical checklist

  • Audit schedule covers every key area
  • Every shortfall has an action, owner and due date
  • Closed actions are verified by a named person
  • Monthly governance report reviewed by leaders
  • Risk register reviewed
  • Repeat findings identified and escalated
