CQC Regulation 10 · Dignity and respect
CQC Regulation 10: dignity and respect
Regulation 10 requires people to be treated with dignity and respect. That includes privacy, supporting independence and involvement in the community, and having due regard to protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
MyCareCompliance brings practical CQC audits, evidence, workforce oversight and improvement actions into one platform for adult social care providers.

Who it applies to
Every CQC-registered provider of a regulated activity. It is relevant to every member of staff who supports people, and to the environment and systems the provider controls.
What providers should consider
- Is personal care delivered in private, with doors closed and people covered?
- Do staff knock and wait, and use the name the person prefers?
- Are people supported to do what they can for themselves?
- Are cultural, religious, gender and sexuality-related needs respected in care planning?
- Is confidential information discussed and stored appropriately?
What evidence may be relevant
- Observations of practice and spot checks
- Care plans recording preferences about personal care, such as the gender of carer
- Equality and diversity training records
- Feedback, compliments and complaints about how people were treated
Common areas to review
- Task-focused language in records (e.g. 'fed', 'toileted')
- Rushed home care visits that limit choice
- Personal information visible to others
Internal audit questions
- 1.In observed practice, did staff protect privacy during personal care?
- 2.Do records use respectful, person-centred language?
- 3.Are people's preferences about who supports them with personal care recorded and followed?
- 4.Have concerns about dignity raised by people or relatives been investigated and learned from?
Practical checklist
- Spot checks include dignity and privacy
- Preferred name and personal-care preferences recorded
- Equality characteristics considered in care plans
- Confidentiality maintained in records and conversations
- Dignity-related complaints investigated
